The Department of Agricultural Engineering came into existence in the year 1978 which was also the year of beginning of SASRD as a college of Agriculture under North-Eastern Hill University. Initially, the Department offered the courses in the disciplines of Physics, Mathematics and Agricultural Engineering to the students of PU(Agri.) and B.Sc (Agri.). In the past some minor courses were also taught by teachers of the department to the M.Sc (Agri.) students of soil convervation. The Department was given the post graduate status when its Board of Post Graduate Studies was formed Vide Nagaland University Notification No. FA-B/BBGS/3-3/(Conf) 95 Dt. 07-12-95, consequent on the transfer of SASRD to Nagaland University from NEHU.
Thrust area of Research:
i) Application of Soil and Water Engineering for improvement of hill agriculture.
ii) Small farm implementation suitable for hill agriculture.
Academic Activities in the Department:
i) Small agriculture implements suitable for hilly region and other equipment related to Soil and Water Engineering have been procured from ICAR research complex, Shillong Meghalaya for practical training to the students.
ii) The Department has developed a site on the institutional farm consisting of farm structures for the field practicals of the students.
