Nagaland University - Department of Chemistry

Brief Introduction

Department of Chemistry was established in the year 1997, with Dr. M. Indira Devi as Head of the Department. The Department was initiated with minimum infrastructure and facilities. Over the years, it has been able to procure some high-end research equipment, through various externally funded projects. The Department is severely limited, especially in terms of faculties, technical staff and working space. In the year 2009 the Department was shifted to the permanent buildings and this has partially eased the space constraints.

Highlight of Research activities

The faculties in the Department are involved in their own research activities in areas of spectroscopic studies of rare-earth elements, radiation induced polymer modifications, green chemistry and heterocyclic chemistry. Works in these areas have resulted in some publications.

As an extension activity, the Department is taking initiatives to start a science popularization programme to inspire school children to enjoy pursuit of science.

Vision

While the long-term vision is to offer courses and training in areas of chemistry such as medicinal chemistry, green chemistry and nano- chemistry, the immediate vision is to have the Department strengthened with adequate man-power.

Thrust areas

The areas are as follows:

  • spectroscopic studies of lanthanides
  • gamma-induced modification of polymers/ nuclear track detectors
  • development of greener reagents and synthetic protocols
  • synthesis of heterocyclic compounds
