Nagaland University - Department of Geology

Since its inception, the Department of Geology has been functioning in the premises of Kohima Science College, Jotsoma, located nearly 7 Km North-west of Kohima town. This is the science Department under Nagaland University which has been identified by the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India, New Delhi for support in Level-1 category under the programme, “Fund for improvement of Science & Technology infrastructure in University and Higher Educational Institutions (FIST)”. The grant received under the scheme shall be utilized by the department in strengthening infrastructures for teaching and research within a period of 5 yrs. In addition, the department has also received the one-time UGC grant for the procurement of various equipments/instruments in the Department to support the academic activities.

Besides upgrading the M.Sc syllabus, the Department has also pursuing various research activities to cater the academic needs of the students in the region.

At present, there are eighteen PG students and twenty one research scholars on the roll of the department. The seven specialized faculty, eight qualified technical staff, two office staff and eight group D staff members constitute the Geology family of the University.

Courses offered:

i) M.Sc Geology (four semester course)

ii) Ph.D

Thrust area of Reseach:

Sandimentological palsontological, Structural, Economic and Landslide studies of Nagaland and other states.

Academic activities in the Department:

Organization of Geological Field trip to various parts of the country.

Project undertaken: Two DST Projects

i) Project title: Provenance and Palaeoenvironmental studies of pre-and syn-orogenic Cenozoic stratigraphic sequence in parts of Naga hill, NE India.

ii) Project title: Biostratigraphy, Boundary Events and sea level changes or the tertiary sediments of Nagaland State, India.
